Gallery koal is looking forward to starting the new year off with the first presentation of artist Stefania Batoeva in its space. Out of seemingly naive what-if-questions, Stefania Batoeva develops fantastic scenarios, the effects and potentials of which are played through in her works of poetic quality. What would happen to the world and life as we know it, if gravity was reversed for a moment and everything that was previously light and disposed to move upward was suddenly heavy and pulled down? Exploring this question in the exhibition Wrong Way Up, Batoeva, for example, purposely confronts light and heavy objects. Due to the changed conditions these objects are forced to rearrange themselves in their mutual relations. The paradoxical nature of the world Batoeva creates, its utterly improbable situations which are completely removed from the natural laws of our world is once again in evidence when the forces are played off against each other in such a way as to cancel each other and are tantamount to an apparently effortless levitation.

Stefania Batoeva (* 1981 in Sofia, Bulgaria) lives and works in London, where she studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. In 2009 she won the Gaudenz B. Ruf Award in the category of Young Artists, while in 2010 she was among the finalists of the BAZA Awards at the Institute of Contemporary Art - Sofia.
