Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present a new commission for The Box by American-born and London based artist Susan Hiller. Concerned with unearthing the forgotten or repressed, Hiller is one of the most influential artists working today and has become renowned for her large-scale multi-media installations. Using processes of collecting and archiving, her work explores collective experiences of subconscious and unconscious thought and paranormal activity.

Hiller's new work for The Box combines sound frequencies and visual patterns translated from radio waves emitted by the Big Bang with a series of eye-witness accounts of extraterrestrial phenomena. Referencing cosmology, dreams and contemporary visionary experiences, this is the only film Hiller has presented in this particular format, with its installation in The Box being an integral part of the work.

Susan Hiller's most important solo exhibitions in the UK include those at the ICA, London, 1986; Tate Liverpool, 1996; Matt's Gallery, 1980, 2008, and 2013; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, 2004 and a major retrospective at Tate Britain, 2011. Outside of the UK, recent solo exhibitions include From Here to Eternity, Kunsthalle Nürnberg (2012); Magic Lantern, Index, Stockholm 2006, and Susan Hiller: Recall - A Selection of Works 1969-2004, Museu Serralves, Porto, 2004 and Kunsthalle Basel, 2005.

Hiller's upcoming solo exhibitions for 2014 include those at The National Museum, Oslo; The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Canada, and the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art (2-person).

Susan Hiller's work is represented in numerous international collections including Tate, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Deutsche Bundestag Art Collection, Berlin; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Colby College Museum of Art, Maine; Ella Fontanals Cisneros Collection, Miami; Frac Bourgogne, Dijon; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; National Gallery of Art, Adelaide; UBS Collection Zurich; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
