Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present a new commission for The Box by Texas based artist Trenton Doyle Hancock, from 15 March to 28 April 2013. Hancock is known for his hybrid constructions in which he combines storytelling, painting and collage. Hancock constructs surreal and mythological narratives that often draw on biographical sources, and more recently, explore his own roots as a black artist. The Box is a unique architectural space through which the gallery facilitates new projects with important emerging and established artists. Other recent commissions include Ai Weiwei, Martha Rosler, Olaf Breuning, Daniel Arsham and David Batchelor.

Trenton Doyle Hancock's recent solo exhibitions include those at Canzani Center Gallery, Columbus School of Art & Design, Columbus; James Cohan Gallery, New York; Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; Institute for Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and The Fruitmarket, Edinburgh. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues such as The Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; Kiev International Biennale of Contemporary Art 2012; Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Institut Néerlandais, Paris; Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville; TX 11: Texas Biennial, Arlington; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland; The Drawing Room, London; and Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Hancock's work is in important collections including Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
