Metaphysical imagination with individual vitality
The primary purpose of hair is to protect the head from danger, such as exposure to environmental elements. Hair also contains various socio-cultural meanings. It is unquestionable that hair represents ones’ social standing, personality, fashion, and group identity. It is a crucial element to indicate an individuals’ autonomy and individuality in the modern era. Hair is also viewed as a symbolic aspect of life, death, and desire in an archetypical dimension. Yeasun Shin’s installation artwork is intended to depict hair as an individual object used to grasp the meaning of metaphysical imagination.
In metaphysical imagination one must first view an object with an independent awareness and in doing so, may then become part of the cognitive system.
Shin defines hair as an organic form which connotes personal metaphysical imagination. She aimed to present the meaning of hair as an archetypical object. Her intent is simply to view hair as an organic object where socio-cultural meanings coexist. Tension is created by the dichotomies such as life vs. death, grotesque vs. sexual, and heavy vs. light in the installations created with artificial hair.
Conversely, mechanical devices incorporated into the work create movement of the motionless object and thus making the audience react to the piece in a different manner. These mechanical devices placed internally create agitation and movement of the exterior. The ultimate purpose of Shin’s artwork is to display the coexistence of metaphysical imagination with natural and artificial objects. Each exists independently and produces a barrage of various meanings
