Yvonne Kendall, Home swan, 2011, curtain material and thread, 50 x 106 x 35cm
Yvonne Kendall will indeed be enjoying the pleasure of flight as she travels back to Melbourne from Germany for her exhibition at Niagara Galleries in August.
Kendall's work has always been particularly autobiographical. Recent exhibitions have documented her literal and metaphorical putting down of roots in a new country and her quest to define a true sense of home through soft textile sculptures of books, turtles and trees. The swan, a symbol of purity, love and transformation, is a central feature of the current work and hints at a shift of identity that comes with the surety of a maturing relationship and career. A number of these works were exhibited in Returning to the Surface, a collaborative exhibition with partner Henning Eichinger at Flottmann-Hallen, in Germany in 2011.
The artist will be conducting a "Flight around the exhibition" on Saturday 11th August at 2pm for anyone interested in hearing Kendall talk about her work and the intriguing personal motivations behind it.
Private appointments are now available to preview the exhibition prior to the opening. Please contact the gallery to arrange a time or to request a list of works.
