Zoobs, 'Ego is the enemy', solo exhibition of original prints
'Ego is the enemy is the debut solo show by British visual artist Zoobs and premieres in his hometown London. It celebrates his extensive body of work from the last 5 years in word and image, and is divided between two floors at west Londons' SaLon Gallery in Westbourne Grove.
The glossy technicolour of works on the ground floor of the gallery is a stark contrast to the almost monochromatic underworld which lies beneath it at the basement level. While ground level work runs parallel with commerciality, excess, opulence and modern ideals of perfection, work at the basement level questions this very existence by eradicating the materialistic elements and stripping away the colourful celebratory aspects of a modern perfect world thus posing questions on such a way of life, the outcome of which is sometimes as dark and sinister as 'A Graveyard Tombstone' or as light and ethereal as 'Conception of Heaven'.
'Ego is the enemy' sees celebrities as modern prophets, a metamorphosis of traditional religious iconography into modern symbols of vanity, and makes a suggestion of designer coffins as an exaggerated cynical outlook on the way of the world of fashion. Death is portrayed as both dark and light reactions, stripping away layers which surround a modern lifestyle. 'Ego is the Enemy' comprises of Photography, Video Art, Literature, music and performance on the opening night. |
