Photographer Jordan Doner To Create an Interactive "Performative" Installation During Art Basel Miami Beach Week

MIAMI - October 30, 2009 - Celebrated photographer Jordan Doner will headline an extraordinary one-night-only, "omni-cultural" interactive installation, "Land," at 101/exhibit on December 1 before unveiling his new photographic exhibition on December 4 during Art Basel Miami Beach week.

Art Viewers Become Art Subjects

On Tuesday, December 1, guests will enter an antechamber of Doner's "Land" interactive installation after signing a model waiver acknowledging that they, too, will become artist's muse within the exhibition. Doner's interior space features backlit cavernous, billowy parachute silk and hard sections of infinity mirrors - an homage to the experimental utopian architecture of 1960s Art Farm and Archigram works. Videos by Doug Aitken, Vito Acconci, and others organized by Haley Mellin will be projected and displayed on flat panels that cut into the flowing space.

Mixing with guests will be a cast-of-characters dressed in architecturally cut nude bodysuits. The bodysuits will be created by NYC-based avant-garde fashion label threeASFOUR, coming off their well-received collaboration with Yoko Ono at New York Fashion Week. Natasha Royt and Ashley Javier from Art + Commerce will style the bodysuits, which will be screen printed with Doner's photos of idealized nudes to give the appearance of actual nudity. Male and female bodysuits will be worn by high-fashion models, characters who fall outside the realm of conventional beauty, and cross-gendered characters - males and females wearing opposite gendered images.

By passing through a narrow slit into a "Back Chamber," guests will transform from art observer into artistic subject, becoming in Doner's words "a consumer of a counterfeit peak moment." Pinned to the soft inflatable flooring, and surrounded by the models and characters in the bodysuits, guests will suddenly feel afloat as the center of a stylized, fantastic landscape. At the right moment, Doner will snap his shutter and the guests will be forever memorialized in their personal state of nature. One that is entirely staged, but for which they will have eternal visual proof.

Signed 4" x 5" archive ink-jet prints from the sequence of images pulled from these "sessions" will then be available at 101/exhibit on Friday, December 4, when Doner's second exhibition opens.

Luxury Goods Become Explosive Art

Friday, December 4, Doner opens his exhibition at 101/exhibit, which will run through January 9, 2010. Doner will unveil large-scale photographs and mixed-media imagery. Prints from the December 1st interactive installation will also be on display.

His centerpiece will be a large-scale photographic diptych of exploding artist-edition luxury handbags "Louis Vuitton, Murakami Cerises," and "Louis Vuitton, Richard Prince Jokes." Accompanying the diptych, and treading the line between photography and sculpture, will be "Edition of 1," 15 unique photographic sculptures featuring luxury goods explosions, idealized and uninhibited nudes, and landscapes abstracted from the ethereal spaces of the earlier performance installation. Each "Edition of 1" framed 16" x 20" photograph will be fused with materials from the now-deconstructed antechamber environment -- nylon from the bodysuits, silk-screens of explosions and nudes over nylon or Plexiglas, and bits of debris from the detonated luxury goods.

Joining the artist for the December 4 opening night festivities will be the cast-of-characters in the threeASFOUR bodysuits in a fully exposed "Back Chamber," and a sculptural treatment of the screened bodysuits on display.

101/exhibit, a unique space dedicated to showcasing provocative art, will provide an ideal backdrop for Doner's installations. By pushing boundaries and dissecting the predictable, the gallery is quickly gathering a strong following of contemporary art vanguards. Owned and operated by Jerome Shaw, Sloan Schaffer and Adam Wolfson, 101/exhibit strives to provide a dynamic gathering place unrestricted by era, locale, or convention. 101/exhibit is located at 101 NE 40th Street, in the heart of Miami's Design District.
