Hall 2.0 - Booth B3
The gallery A arte Studio Invernizzi has invited the artist Alan Charlton to create an exhibition for "Art 43 Basel".
The exhibition project consists in an interaction between his work and that of Mario Nigro, another great master of the contemporary art world. Charlton has decided to show one of his particularly representative recent works, bringing it into active dialogue with Nigro's works from the 1950s.
The connection between these two artists and these two creative moments is clear to see in their desire to revisit, contradict and modify the geometrical and structural archetypes of the act of painting. This approach is a feature of both artists and they express it in different but parallel ways, creating a long-distance dialogue that can be seen in this exhibition. The show brings about a constructive confrontation and profound analysis through the current creative relevance of the work of Charlton, who has selected some of Nigro's creations, revealing his formative, precursory role, as well as the potential for bringing to life new visual languages and independent spaces of imagery.
The exhibition project does not just compare the formal results and the procedures adopted by two artists of different generations, for it also constitutes an active space in which history encounters and interacts with the present in order to augment its significance. Substantiating this link, Alan Charlton's "Pyramid Grid Painting", 193.5 x 499.5 cm, of 2011, amongst others, will be on show. In this work, the modularity of the grey panels interacts with that of the rectangular element in Mario Nigro's chequered panels, or "pannelli a scacchi".
