LU HAO | THE BERLIN SCROLLS Please visit us at ART HK 11 ASIA ONE booth 3B12 May 26th - May 29th, 2011 In the 1950s and 60s Communist Parties developed the idea of a 'socialistboulevard' as an alternative to the western avenues like Champs Elysées. Nowadays Karl Marx-Allee in Berlin (former Stalin Boulevard) was built between 1952-1960. Between 2005-2006 Beijing based artist Lu Hao born in 1969 created the hand scrolls Chang' An Street and Recordings which have been presented at documenta 12. With THE BERLIN SCROLLS he is showing the German equivalent consisting of 6 scrolls documenting Karl Marx-Allee within a total length of 27 meters. Referring to traditional Chinese architecture painting (jiehua/ gongbihua) Lu Hao was painting on precious silk fabric. THE BERLIN SCROLLS also serve as a snapshot of the current stage of Karl Marx-Allee in 2010. Image: Lu Hao Karl Marx-Allee, 2011, Ink Color on Silk, H:54cm, L:400cm/550cm, 6 scrolls (detail) | |||
