Yin Xiuzhen, born in 1963 and Beijing-based, is meanwhile acknowledged to be one of the most relevant contemporary Chinese artists. In her strongly space- and site-oriented works she deals with the prevailing problems caused by the extremely rapid developments within today's Chinese society. This involves ecological, social and political issues as well as gender-topics. Time and again she is concerned with the idea of securing and documenting, but also with the transfer of identities. She converts her ideas in seemingly ambivalent materials: On the one hand she uses rough substances like concrete or old roof-tiles, but at the same time she also uses rather 'intimate' textures, strongly tied to the sphere of personal memories, like pieces of clothes worn by her friends, that she sews up and reworks in her installations… She repeatedly points to the personal dimension of the violence following the fundamental transformation-processes in Chinese society.

Under the title 'Everyday Miracles' she will now exhibit at the Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Biennial, together with three other female artists - Shen Yuan, Kan Xuan und Cao Fei.

This project is directed by the internationally renowned Chinese critic and curator Hou Hanru, who has frequently published texts on Chinese contemporary art and on the work of Yin Xiuzhen.

Alexander Ochs presented Yin Xiuzhen for the first time in the exhibition 'in / from China, art + architecture', in 1999. In 2001 the Gallery showed the artist in the exhibition 'Suitcases & Cie', centering on the work Beijing Opera (also at the big show 'Living in time' at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, 2001). For the latest solo-exhibition at the Berlin Gallery in November 2006 the artist created the room-filling installation INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL 1, now shown in a modified version at Quality Street in Frankfurt / M., Germany.

Here, Yin Xiuzhen presents all the characteristic elements of an airport-environment, thereby evoking one of the modern rooms of transit that have become hardly distinguishable and consequently evoke the impression of an assimilation of people and spaces, of a seemingly universal de-individualisation. A noticeable contradistinction is established by the materials used by the artist: She works solely with textile-fabrics that she sewed together herself. Their softness and intimate quality stands in a conceivable contrast to the smooth, cold and polished surface-structures of an actual airport-environment. By this, Yin Xiuzhen not only consciously undermines the illusionary-character of her installation and points to its artificial character, but at the same time - by using worn pieces of clothes - evokes the personal experiences and characteristic traits of the people wearing them. Therewith she restitutes elements of an individual, specific identity to the anonymous space…
