  Art Beijing 2006 -China's most exciting contemporary art fair, the core of which is "pushing forward the Chinese contemportary art" - took place in the autumn , October 6-10, 2006 in the National Agricultural Exhibition Center, one of the Capital's "Ten Major Building Projects".
Art Beijing 2006 contemporary art fair is the first and the most important program of the original cultural brand "Art Beijing". The 110 exhibitors of Art Beijing 2006 come from 12 countries and areas around the world. The native participating galleries come from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Other participating galleries come from Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, U.S.A. and Mexico. For example, the participating galleries include White Space Beijing & Alexander Ochs Galleries Berlin??Beijing, Arario Beijing, Red Gate Gallery, Galleria Continua Beijing from Beijing, Dimensions Art Center from Taiwan, Shangart Gallery, Red Bridge Gallery, Aura Gallery and Gallery 55 from Shanghai. Art Beijing has exceeded the situation of the art fair in China. It closely combines the academic value with commercial value.
Art Beijing 2006 always pays equal attention to both academic value and commercial value. Art Unforbidden, as the thematic exhibition of Art Beijing 2006, was organized by famous curator Pi Li. The theme of Art Unforbidden is "current situation" and "future". It covered the space of 1000? in exhibition hall and invited 19 active artists such as Chen Jieren and Michael Lin to participate in. These works by the middle aged and young artists usually take the picture of practical life as the staring point, which is different from that contemporary art emphasizing on judgment and concept for reality in the past. By means of adaptation, re-molding and illusion, they achieve the image adaptation. Their works stress on the delicate and lifelike making, even more emphasize on returning back from concept to visual sense in the contemporary art. Directly perceived through the senses, these works are very close to the visual experience provided by the present life trend and the popular arts, as well as more individual color and humane concern. The participating artists showed mainly video recording, photograph taken and installation. There were also some paintings.
Youth Art Zone is an eye-catching and completely new flashing point of Art Beijing 2006. During the 5 days' fair, Youth Art Zone displayed the young artists' thinking space and their pursuing for arts through video and interactive exchanges on the spot with the artists. Youth Art Zone is a highly praising and introducing space for the new arts, with the staring point and whereabouts on exploring the young artists'creative state. It works for finding out and introducing those who are sharp and accurate in seizing the contemporary art development trend. It is a kind of art recommendation event different from the commercial activities. Youth Art Zone is trying to explore in the academic point of view the value obtaining of the Chinese contemporary art development and the youner artists how to see through the most active art pulse. The theme of Youth Art Zone of Art Beijing 2006 is designed as Young Artists in Beijing. Through this focalized showing method, the young artists' state of mind and art was displayed comprehensively and emphatically of facing Beijing, the representative of metropolitan culuture.

Over 1000 guests, including art collectors, artists, officials, media, entertainment and music celebrities, participated in the VIP Preview Exhibition & Opening Ceremony of Art Beijing 2006 on October 5th, 2006.
Art Economy Forum, as one of important special events of Art Beijing 2006, includes thematic forum and special forum. The two topices of thematic forum are "Current Creation Situation and Recent Collection Trends of Contemporary Art" and "The Strategy in Art Investment and The Management of Art Fund". The speakers of thematic forum are the international experts in art market, including Uli Sigg, the former ambassador of Switzerland in China and art collector, John Tancock, the vice-director of Sotheby's New York Ltd., Pierre Huber, the founder of the Gallery Art & Public. The speakers of special forum are the directors of some famous galleries, art media, and public media. The topices of special forum are about the management of gallery and the responsibilities of contemporary art media.
Moreover, Beijing Green Collar and the Art Beijing Executive Committee gathered together on October 6th, 2006, jointly creating and establishing "GAAS", an embodiment of the Chinese contemporary artistic ability in appreciation and collection. The basic members of GAAS consist of members of Green Collar Club and VIP members of Art Beijing. They will enjoy from all round the services providing art materials and information on art market; participating high level activities of art appreciation, getting guidance and support of art appreciation and investment from the authorized experts. According to the Art Beijing Executive Committee, the number of visitors is over 20,000. The total volume of trade of Art Beijing 2006 is well over RMB 2 hundred million. In addition, many works reached trade intentions. Some Taiwan galleries, which have already gone deep into the art market in Beijing and the native galleries are the biggest winners. Dimensions Art Center sold about 20 sculptures of Translucency series, which are created by young artist Unmask and very hot in the fair. The volume of trade of Arario Beijing is USD 0.3 million on the first day of Art Beijing 2006. Michael Petronko from the United States sold Marilyn Monroe, one of art works of Andy Warhol at the price of RMB 0.8 million. Two Spanish galleries sold 10 prints of J. Miro at the unit price of RMB 75,000. Gem Gallery from France sold 16 prints of Zhu Dequn. The works of Korean galleries are also gradually popular. Some galleries almost sold out their works in the fair. In all, the volume of trade in prints, sculptures and videos is obviously more than former years'.
Art Beijing 2006 achieved its both academic and commercial goal. The organizer has already begun to prepare Art Beijing 2007 and tentatively plan to hold the fair in the new hall of National Agricultural Exhibition Center in September, 2007.
