History of Art Brussels|
The creation of the "Art Actuel" Fair
In 1968 the Association of Contemporary Art Galleries organised "Art Actuel" for the first time in the commercial center of the Galleries Louise. This makes artbrussels one of the first art fairs in Europe.
In the following years the "Art Actuel" was internationally renowned for its cutting edge profile and the high standard of international galleries presented in the fair.
"Art Actuel" emerged as a small but high quality international fair. It has become the place to meet for an increasing number of contemporary art collectors and art lovers.
In 1997 the Belgian Association of Contemporary Art Galleries, entrusted the organisation of the Fair to Eric Everard. 1997 constituted an important turning point for the fair. Milestones were set for a new departure: opening to modern art after 1950, a new name, a new visual concept.
Faced with the demand of the contemporary art market, a growing interest from an increasing public and the excellent results of the '97 edition, the fair became an annual event. This positioned artbrussels on the international fair agenda. The renewed growth of the recent editions insured the success of artbrussels on the international art scene.
More than any other event in Belgium, artbrussels is a show that, year after year, manages to hold the attention of the entire art world. A place where foreign galleries and artists find an ideal platform to present themselves to Belgian collectors, and where young Belgian talent can introduce itself to the international market.
