Lars Dittrich and André Schlechtriem are pleased to present “Ära” (era), the long-anticipated solo exhibition of new works by Klaus Jörres. The characteristic quality of Jörres’s art is a purism that presents and represents the intrinsic value of the object as a thing in itself. The semblance of simplicity unifies the canvas as an object and surface, turning it into an interpellative resonance chamber that leaves the viewer in a state of stark self-reflection. The classical geometric clarity of the grid is combined with the distinctive spray-painted mark, a salient feature the artist has modeled in recent years into a core element of his oeuvre.
In analogy with the basic definition of painting—the distribution of color across a surface—the minimalist-constructive canvas functioning as object is complemented by another layer that seeks to elude the attribution of meaning. Still, any new chromatic trace generates unique surplus information that begins to constitute the work, inscribing itself upon the object as well as the viewer’s senses. The dialectic between the constructive-factual and aesthetic-instinctive registers in Jörres’s art manifests itself as a lively dialogue between a phenomenology of forms and colors and an ontology of consciousness.
Klaus Jörres (1973) was born in Düren and has lived and worked in Berlin since 1999. He studied fine arts at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he graduated in Katharina Sieverding’s master class. Jörres’s work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Mönchehaus Museum of Modern Art, Goslar, and in several group shows such as “Conceptual Tendencies 1960s to Today II” at Daimler Contemporary, Berlin (2013), “MoDiMiDoFrSaSo” at VeneKlasen Werner, Berlin (2011), and “BERLIN2000” at the Pace Gallery, New York (2009).
DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM will publish a catalogue in conjunction with the exhibition. For press inquiries and further information, please contact Owen Clements at owen@dittrich-schlechtriem.com.
