Ellen de Bruijne Projects at LISTE 17 Erkka Nissinen and Falke Pisano Booth 06G1 June 12th - 17th 2012 Erkka Nissinen At LISTE17 Ellen de Bruijne Projects will present a preview of Polis, the newest film by Erkka Nissinen. Due to his intricate imagination, his works are characterized by absurdity, humor, parody and intentional clumsiness. Polis is a video where an assortment of absurdist characters inhabit a utopian city development designed by Le Corbusier and Albert Speer, who jokingly called it Polis. The city creates a space for a series of incoherent comic developments. The cast ranges from a plumber and a bear to porn actors and even politicians. They possess grotesque names like "Stupid Cunt", "Pig Shit Tit Ass Sailor" and "Boring Fuck". All inhabitants are in some way confronted with their ethical and moral position in the social construction which makes up Polis. They have to make choices about methods of interaction with other inhabitants, and decide if they want to communicate with them at all. How are groups formed, who will be excluded, and for what reason? Other inhabitants philosophize about completely different matters, like the connection between platonic solids and human characteristics, living in the now, the question about being, and the paralyzing power of the presence of unlimited possibilities. Falke Pisano At LISTE17 Ellen de Bruijne Projects will present the work of Falke Pisano. Inspired primarily by the act of thinking and the possibilities of constructing and solving problems in the field of language, Pisano uncovers structures, dismantling her subjects to their core construction. In the two exhibited series Pisano has expanded her interests to the field of humor with its unique characteristics. Not only does it provide language with a range of new meanings; humor is also capable of addressing things that are usually not spoken about out loud. With cartoons as her material, Pisano analyses the phenomenon in her own ingenious manner, laying bare its possibilities and imperfections. In the Untitled book collages (Communication,Body,Text, Escape) Pisano removes the humorous association of the comics, bringing them back into the field of language construction by arranging them on top of her own writings. The cartoons may give the heavy text a comical and frivolous note, but at the same time they have lost most of their hilarity. The question raises what humor exactly is and how it operates.
