  Emilija Škarnulytė (photography)

29 December 2011, 6 p.m.

Emilija Škarnulytė (born 1987) is an emerging artist working in the field of interdisciplinary art. She mostly uses video and photography, and produces installations and performances. In 2010, she graduated from the Brera Academy, Milan, where she studied sculpting. The artist has recently participated and worked in residencies in South Korea and the Philippines. She has held personal shows in Milan, Paris and Athens. In 2009, she was awarded the Italian National Prize of Fine Art for her video Limbic City.

The review introduces Emilija's latest project Dingusio miesto slėnis (The Valley of the Lost City) consisting of pictures and videos of the Raigardas Valley which has been painted by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. This year was Čiurlionis' death anniversary which inspired Emilija to read the notes of the most prominent Lithuanian artist and try to recreate and record the places of the Raigardas Valley he has visited.

Contemporary art gallery Vartai organises open reviews of artworks. These practical one-hour Thursday events introduce the latest works of a selected artist and analyse the genre, development, uniqueness and potential of his or her artwork.

Through the Thursday reviews, Vartai gallery aims to collect and publicise the latest news on the works of contemporary artists, provide a more exhaustive introduction of the authors, promote works of acclaimed artists and discover new promising names. The knowledge gathered during the reviews will be used to plan exhibitions curated by Vartai gallery in Lithuania and abroad, and to select participants of fairs.

The reviews organised by Vartai gallery are first of all aimed at art collectors, museums and art critics, but they are also open to everyone showing interest in the latest developments in artists' workshops. Works submitted for reviews shall be available for viewing and purchase in the Review Room of Vartai gallery.

Personal presentations of artworks can be arranged for art collectors any day of the week. Please, arrange your visit in advance by contacting Vartai gallery on the phone +370 5 2122 949 or by e-mail
