On the occasion of Art 39 Basel A arte Studio Invernizzi presents a solo exhibition of Gianni Colombo.
This exhibition intends to present seminal pieces which describe all the different creative moments of the artist, from the end of the 1950s until 1992.
The core interest of Gianni Colombo's work has been to establish a new relationship between the individual and the cognitive structures inner to the human experience, starting from the perceptive ones, nevertheless intended by him in a wider sense, which involves the bodily dimension on its whole. Colombo's work aims at giving a new shape to both the physical and psychic relationship between the individual and the space around him: this bond is investigated by him through works in motion (real, visual, ideal motion), tending to question our usual guide lines in experiencing the real.
Among the works on display for this occasion, "Strutturazione pulsante (Pulsative Structuration)" of 1959 is emblematic of this aspect: for Colombo the structure is not a concluded entity, but "structuration", that is entity in dynamic progress and which can be only known approximating. Moreover, an articulated group of works belonging to the cycle of the "Spazio elastico (Elastic Space)", elaborated from the end of the 1960s, will be exhibited. These works proposes, both in the big environmental realizations and in their object declension, hypotheses of changeable and spatial configurations continuously in progress. "0?220 volt", another work on display realized in the half of the 1970s, investigates the relationship with technology through the estranging and, at the same time, evocative effect generated by temporally determined sequences of light intervals. This work is conceived in order to be placed on corner and it's also witness of an architectural vocation which just for its aesthetic-didactic intention, tends constantly to the paradox, to the negation of the constructive categories. Finally, the last works of 1992 "Opus incertum" and "Spazio curvo (Curved Space)", where the spatial investigation through a real and technologically deformed dynamics produces effects of uncertainty and continuous alteration, which intend to underline that we can't help thinking with our body while running across anywhere.
The works on display reflect the dominant matrix of Gianni Colombo's history as artist: the enlightened and positive conviction of a noethic tension of arts, which let the audience/visitor become an active element, a possibility of opening to new categories and new cognitive paradigms: in this sense, it's an ethical project tended to re-found the consciousness, starting from the knowledge.

Gianni Colombo (1937-1993) starts to exhibit paintings, sculptures and ceramics in 1955. Between 1958 and 1959 he realizes his first monochrome cotton wool relieves, which are showed at the Galleria Azimut, founded by Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani in Milan. Colombo participates to the organization and the activity of the gallery together with Giovanni Anceschi, Davide Boriani and Gabriele De Vecchi. In 1959 he creates the "Gruppo T" with them, which Grazia Varisco joins the following year to. In 1963 Colombo participates to the organization of the international movement "Nuove Tendenze" and in 1968 he wins the first prize at XXXIV Venice Biennale with the work "Spazio elastico (Elastic Space)". In 1970 he realizes the videotape "Vobulazione e bieloquenza NEG" in collaboration with Vincenzo Agnetti and some "Ingombri estetici (Aesthetic Obstructions)" with De Vecchi for the exhibition "Amore mio" in Montepulciano. In 1978 he participates, together with Filiberto Menna, to a meeting-conference at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna of Rome and then he is charged with the design of the Monument to the European Resistance by the Municipality of Como that is unveiled in 1983. In 1980 he becomes lecturer of Space Structuration at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti of Milan, where he is Director from 1985. In 1981 he wins the competition "Kunst am Bau" in Berlin, and the following year he gives a series of lectures at the faculty of Architecture there. In 1983 he presents an important solo exhibition at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea in Suzzara. In 1984 Colombo is invited to realize an exhibition for the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea of Milan and to the Venice Biennale with a solo show. In 1986 he creates the settings for "Stephen Climax" by Hans Zender at the Operntheater in Frankfurt, while he realizes in 1988 three open-air "Architetture cacogoniometriche (Cacogoniometric Architectures)" in Morterone, Carpi and Furka Pass. In 1992 he presents the works "Spazio curvo (Curved Space)" at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden and "Spazio diagoniometrico (Diagonometric Space)" at the Galerie Hoffmann in Friedberg. In 1994 Studio Marconi in Milan dedicates to him a solo exhibition, in the same year the Städtische Galerie in Würzburg exhibites the "Spazio diagoniometrico für Hans Poelzig".
In 1995 the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten in Marl realizes a solo exhibition as a tribute to him and the anthological exhibition "I Colombo. Joe Colombo 1930-1971. Gianni Colombo 1937-1993" takes place at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Bergamo.
In 1999 the Fondazione Stelline in Milan organizes the solo exhibition "Gianni Colombo: Spazi" and the Sogetsu Art Museum of Tokyo the exhibition "Gianni Colombo. L'artista e il suo mondo".
In 2004 the Galleria del Premio Suzzara presents the exhibition "Gianni Colombo. Lo spazio come campo attivo" and in 2006 the solo exhibition Gianni Colombo is realized at the Rotonda di Via Besana in Milan.
In 2007 A arte Studio Invernizzi gallery in Milan dedicates to him the exhibition where works from 1959 to 1992 are on display.

In the last decade Gianni Colombo takes part to several group exhibitions, as the touring exhibition "Luce, movimento e programmazione. Kinetische Kunst aus Italien 1958-1968" at the Ulmer Museum in Ulm, at the Städtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim, at the Städtisches Museum in Gelsenkirchen, at the Stadtgalerie in Kiel, at the Staatliches Museum in Schwerin and the Alpen Adria Galerie in Klagenfurt. In 2005 he is among the artists on display on the occasion of the exhibition "L'œil moteur. Art optique et cinetique 1950-1975" at the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain in Strasbourg and during the same year he also partecipates to the exhibition "Gli ambienti del gruppo T" at the Galleria Nazionale d'arte Moderna e contemporanea in Rome. In 2006 he appears among the artists taking part to several historical exhibitions which are organized in Düsseldorf, Saint Petersburg, Shanghai, Ingolstadt, Karlsruhe, Zurich and Seville. In the same year he participates to the exhibition "Il Modo Italiano. Italian Design and Avant-garde in the 20th Century" at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and the MART of Trento and Rovereto.
Gianni Colombo takes part to the exhibition "Time & Place: Milano/Torino, 1958-1968", which the Moderna Museet in Stockholm celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2008 with.
