hilger contemporary is pleased to present a special presentation at ARCO 2009 - a diptych of recent Grow Finish Unit works by John Gerrard (b. 1974 in Dublin, Ireland). These works are virtual representations of unmanned pig production sites in the stark Panhandle landscape of the USA. The Grow Finish Unit series documents the extremes of functionality to be found at the start of the industrialised food production chain. It is also significant in the light of recent works that pigs in these environments are fed on corn fertilized and grown using nitrogen derived from oil and gas, thus rendering the occupants of these sheds in essence, oil derived pigs. The artist has suggested that these scenes can be understood as a form of existent virtuality. Behind the eight sheds that are the focus of each work lies a large effluent lake which is surprisingly beautiful as it reflects the sky. An autonomous virtual wind animates the surface dust and debris in an ongoing and open way creating the principal movements in the piece. In a symbolic moment of exchange within the work, reflecting the growth cycle of the pigs enclosed there, a single transport truck pulls to each building every 6-8 months and waits for 1 hour. At no point are the many thousands of occupants of the eight sheds visible, as this is the case in reality. Grow / Finish Unit (Eva, Oklahoma) 2008 and Grow Finish Unit (Elkhart, Kansas) 2008 unfold in realtime over the 365 days of the year and light conditions through dawn and dusk match that of the local site. hilger contemporary is also pleased to present a new work titled Daylight Fan (Orbital Camera), Sales of this edition will support a major Collateral Project of the Venice Biennial 2009 by John Gerrard / RHA Projects, Dublin.

JOHN Gerrard Special Project for Bienale di Venezia 2009

Images on the paintings and drawings by the Slovenian painter and representative of Slovenia at the Venice Biennal 2009 Miha Štrukelj take us into the world of traumatic historic moments of civilisational madness and self-destruction, while delving into the stories about lyrical and withdrawn urban landscapes, random glimpses into the core of the life of metropolis, where the human figure exists only as an insecure witness to the manifested reality, yet still charmed by it. Štrukelj's working process is significantly based on transferring the mediated digital image into traditional painting and drawing mediums.
