KEVIN HARMAN: SKIP 13
6-8 October 2012, Camden, London NW1
As London's Regents Park prepares for the 2012 Frieze Art Fair, young Scottish artist Kevin Harman has been spending his weekend a few streets away, in a Camden skip.
Harman's project for Frieze, Skip 13, a film of which will be on view at Ingleby Gallery's stand during the fair (G19), began on Friday afternoon with the artist combing the streets of N1 for a suitable site in which to make his unusually democratic and generous contribution to the world of public art.
He identified a suitable skip (in a quiet street, brimful of junk) and the builders left for the weekend. Harman worked through the night and the following days removing every scrap from the skip, ordering and sorting by material and size, before carefully putting everything back according to the rhythms of colour, shape and pattern. By Sunday he had created something wonderful and unexpected. Something out of nothing, briefly... before the builders returned this morning confronted by a re-shuffled world.
Exploring the everyday to find the extraordinary, Harman works across media and performance, even if the performance itself remains unseen until unveiled by the artwork. In this he confronts barriers between the act of creation and the act of experience - linking the art and the audience in a moment of shared discovery.
Kevin Harman will read a fifteen minute essay about his work "Before I Begin" on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 12th October at 10.45pm
