THE THING is an experimental publication, created and edited by San Francisco based visual artists Will Rogan and Jonn Herschend. Each issue comes in the form of an everyday object that somehow incorporates text. The issues are conceived of by an individual artist, writer, filmmaker or designer. They are then reproduced and wrapped at a wrapping party and then sent to the homes of the subscribers throughout the world.

Past issues have included the following: Miranda July, Jonathan Lethem, Allora & Calzadilla, Lucy Pullen, Trevor Paglen, and Kota Ezawa. Upcoming issues include contributions by writer and radio personality (most notably from THIS AMERICAN LIFE) Starlee Kine; visual artist Chris Johanson; clothing design collaborative DOO. RI; visual artist, writer and curator Matthew Higgs, and writer Dave Eggers.
