|15 years of LISTE- The Young Art Fair in Basel – a remarkable success story. (17.5.2010)|
||The LISTE - The Young Art Fair in Basel is proud to look back on 15 years of great success. What began in 1996 on the initiative of young gallerists has developed into one of the world's most important fairs for new galleries and young art. David Zwirner from New York, Massimo de Carlo of Milan, Maureen Paley of London, neugerriemschneider of Berlin, Emi Fontana of Milan and Andréhn Chiptjenko of Stockholm belong to those pioneer galleries who were there at the beginning - all of them who can be counted among the most well-established in the art market today.|
The 15th anniversary edition of LISTE - The Young Art Fair in Basel will take place from June 15-20, 2010. Again this year, LISTE will be offering its guests truly remarkable discoveries. Our expert jury has selected 64 galleries from 21 countries from a pool of 350 applications. We will be introducing 13 galleries for the first time at our fair. A number of galleries will be returning to LISTE after successful appearances at Statements at Art Basel. Thus, the most interesting galleries of the younger generation will be represented at LISTE.
The redtoo Art Prize will be awarded for the first time. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to present a second prize - along with the art prize from the Nationale Suisse Insurance Company. The winning gallery will be selected by an international expert jury. The prize includes payment of stand costs and the purchase of a work of art.
Since its inception in 1996, LISTE has made its top priority the introduction of new galleries that have their finger on the zeitgeist and represent important emerging artists. In this way, LISTE contributes in a significant and meaningful way to the promotion of emerging artists and emerging galleries. Consciously limiting the number of participants to 64 galleries - that is, the most important new galleries worldwide - is one of the main reasons for LISTE's great success. Also, its selection policy - choosing trend-setting positions of artists under 40 years and limiting participation to only a few years - gives LISTE its unique importance, high quality and dynamic. At the same time, this concept forms a bridge to Art Basel and serves galleries as a springboard to the world's most important art fair.
A Brief History of LISTE
Beginning at the end of the 1980s, a new self-confident generation of gallerists and artists was growing up, a generation that had little chance of securing a space at the world’s most important art fair, Art Basel. The first LISTE, 1996, which was dedicated exclusively to this new generation, showed 36 galleries from 12 countries, and was a stunning success! If we look back on those 15 years, we find that many of those at the time unknown artists had their debut at LISTE: For example, the painter Wilhelm Sasnal with Foksal Gallery of Warsaw, Jim Lambie, presented by the Modern Institute, with an impressive floor installation that was shown 10 years later at Museum of Modern Art in New York. The then still unknown Elizabeth Peyton, with neugerriemschneider, presented her small format oil and watercolor paintings.. Francesco Vezzoli, with his video works, was represented by Franco Noero. Anselm Reyle showed works with Giti Nourbakhsch. Steven Parreno, Carol Bove and Banks Violette were exhibited by Team of New York. The list of artists who got their start at LISTE is long, and the galleries share the same success story – unknown at the time and today among the most established: neugerriemschneider (Berlin), Eigen + Art (Berlin/Leipzig), Meyer Riegger (Karlsruhe), Foksal Gallery Foundation (Warsaw), Kurimanzutto (Mexico City), Modern Art (London), The Modern Institute (Glasgow), Air de Paris and Emanuel Perrotin from Paris, Massimo di Carlo from Milano, Casey Kaplan and Team from New York.
LISTE Performance Project
For the sixth time, the Performance Project, curated by Silke Bitzer, will take place. The daily changing program offers the visitor a glimpse into the current international performance art scene, while the works of the 12 invited artists reflect the multi-faceted nature of this art form. This year’s program will open with Nezaket Ekici (DE/TR), followed by one of America’s upcoming performance artists, Ryan McNamara, who, like Aideen Barry (IE), will present a work developed especially for LISTE. There will also be performances by Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (DK), Saskia Edens (CH), Dawn Kasper (US) as well as the young artist collective californium 248 (CH/FR).
LISTE Special Guests
This year, our special guest institution will be the Centre Culturel Suisse of Paris, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Swiss artist Didier Rittener is developing a new installation of paper on silk especially for the exhibition in Basel. At the same time, young artists from France and Switzerland, including among others Florian Germann (CH), Vincent Lamoureoux (FR) and Adrien Missika (FR), will present new works at the fair. Kaskadenkondensator Basel will sell copies that young artists have made of works by famous artists. plug.in has invited the artist collective Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.org from Italy, both of whom can be counted amoung Europe’s most important media artists.
Nationale Suisse Insurance Company Art Prize
For the seventh time, the Nationale Swiss Insurance Company will be awarding its highly coveted art prize. This award is open to graduates of Swiss art colleges who have majored in “visual art and media art”. This year’s prize, which includes a monetary award of 15,000 CHF and a solo presentation at LISTE, goes to Elisa Larvego, a graduate of the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design Geneva.
redtoo Art Prize
The new redtoo Art Prize is open to galleries making a first appearance at LISTE. An international expert jury will select the winning gallery from among the newcomer galleries. The prize includes payment of the gallery’s stand costs and the purchase of a work of art. This art prize reinforces LISTE’s status as a promotion fair.It is important to the IT-firm redtoo (Basel) to support and promote emerging galleries and their artists. With the purchase of works from the prize recipient, redtoo will begin to build its own art collection.
