Quoting classical genres, styles, and motifs, Swiss artist Klodin Erb investigates one of the major issues of art history: self-reference. Painting is reflected by theories of art and image and thus becomes the subject matter of art itself. The ostentatious representation of painting encompasses the display of the movements of the paintbrush as well as crude figurative representation. Klodin Erb's painting brims with allusions to art history, yet never appears old-fashioned or stale thanks to the dynamic gestures and the transparent application of colour that both evoke an impression of youthful freshness and ease.
