ShContemporary ended today after five exceptional days, which saw international art professionals and contemporary art aficionados flock to the Shanghai Exhibition Center en masse, to catch a glimpse of the latest offerings that the recovering global contemporary and Asian art markets have to offer.
The extremely positive signal which emerged during the fair is the confirmation of the upturn of the Asian collectors market. The fair exceeded gallery and visitor expectations, as the quantity and calibre of collectors at the fair was much higher than in past years. Galleries reported high satisfaction levels. Jeffrey Ian Rosen of Taka Ishii Gallery (Tokyo) was quoted as saying “we’ve participated at this fair for three years in a row and this year we saw the most Chinese collectors ever.”
Very positive sales were reported in addition to the strong presence of Chinese, Asian, European and American collectors. This was due in large part to the successful launch of the Asia Pacific Collector Development Programme which commenced on September 10th with a magnificent Gala Dinner presented by The Singapore FreePort at which nearly 300 collectors participated.
The Lecture series - including speakers Martha Rosler, Boris Groys and Gao Shiming – explored in much depth the question ‘what is contemporary art’ over a period of four days in an environment designed by Liam Gillick.
Collectors were very impressed by the quality of the art displayed at the fair and were purchasing large works. OTA Fine Arts (Tokyo) sold four pieces by Kusama - all to Asian female collectors - for a total of approximately US $800,000.
Arthur Solway of James Cohan gallery pointed out that “the general feeling of everyone at the fair is that ShContemporary is a resilient fair” while Long March director Lu Jie added “the scale, quality, and look of the fair will have a huge impact on the Asia Pacific market.”
