Chris McCaw was born in Daly City, California, in 1971, and is living and working in San Francisco since 1994. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Academy of Art in 1995. Beginning his exhibiting career in 1991, Chris has exhibited throughout the United States as well as in France and Germany. For list of exhibitions, bibliography, awards, publications and collections please see the attached biography.

Chris is working with a self-made 7"x17" view camera. This format is part of a family of extra large format cameras known as banquet cameras. Everything from the frame to the ground glass, even the bellows, Chris made himself. He is printing in hand-coated platinum/palladium. Originally developed in the 1860’s, this is considered as one of the finest photographic print processes. The unique characteristics include a long tonal scale capable of reproducing every subtle tonality from shadows to highlights in a delicate and smooth fashion, a naturally warm print colour, and permanence to last far beyond our lifetimes. It is often said that a platinum print will last as long as the paper it is printed on – whereas silver based photographic prints will begin to fade away after 100 years, less if not properly processed. Each of Chris’ prints has a brush-applied coating onto 100% rag paper. During the print exposure, the brushed areas outside of the edges of the negative turn black. Because of the manual application, each print has its own unique variety of brush marks – no one like the other. Therefore, in some way each print has its own signature. Eighty percent of Chris’ prints are straight, with no manipulation done during the printing.

“Because all of my work is personal in nature, working with the optics of my home made 7"x17" view camera and printing in hand-coated platinum/palladium is a perfect match. The printing process itself, having the warm tonalities, and the soft mat surface, as well as the simplicity of the direct contact print work so well together to complement the ideas I'm trying to communicate. My work captures those moments in life when you really appreciate the world and how beautiful and strange it can be. …, I am attempting to show these personal moments in a universal, visually nostalgic way.”
