Dear (sm.)ART friends, Michele Brody would like to invite you to visit her one person show Entering from the Inside: The Art of Memory. through Friday, November 14, 2008 @ The Temple Judea Museum in Elkins Park, Philadelphia (located at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel (KI) Please come see the screening of Michele’s new video about the making of her project entitled "Entering from the Inside: The Art of Memory", serving free food from the local community in the form of Knishes, Cornbread and Kim Bab, as well as running a paper making workshop for all ages. This Sunday, October 19, 2008 2-4 pm The essence of Michele Brody’s work is the exploration of how we live with the constant flux of our environment. With a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1989 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994, Ms. Brody has spent the past 14 years creating site-specific, mixed media installations and works of public art that are generated by the history, culture, environment, and architecture of a wide range of venues. While living as a resident artist in such places as France, Germany, Costa Rica, California, the Midwest, New York and now here in Philadelphia, her art career has developed into a process of working in collaboration with each new community she comes in contact with as a means towards developing an interpretation of the sense of a place as an outsider looking in. On the grounds and in the gallery of the Temple Judea Museum, Ms. Brody has created the installation Entering from the Inside: The Art of Memory. It is a work of art based on the process of changing the way visitors to the Museum see and think about the space of the gallery and its historic namesake, Congregation Temple Judea. The exhibition hopes to achieve this by asking the viewer to enter into the past through the present portal of memory, as a means towards opening doors to the future. To understand Ms. Brody’s work is to enter past a threshold that plays with our sense of time and how moments in our lives are translated into memory. She sees this as a very delicate process, which over time can both erode and enhance our recollections of life’s experiences. An example of this can be seen by how a static work of art such as a painting, or a place like a building can be experienced over and over again, yet with each visit a new set of encounters are translated into memories, to the point where it is the mind’s eye that sees the painting or place, stoked with reminiscences of past familiarities, versus the unadulterated occurrence of the first time. Entering from the Inside: The Art of Memory is an ephemeral and evolving installation that will never be the same each time it is viewed. It is the hope of Ms. Brody that once viewers realize this, they will be inspired to return again to see how the work has changed over time, as well as cement each visit into their memory as a work of art itself.
