Born in Chanteloup, Seine-et-Marne (FR)
He attends the Lycée Condorcet without diploma

1923
He is attracted by painting.
Interest in the surrealist movement.


1927 - 1928
studies painting at André Lothe.


1931
stays at the Ivory Coast for one year. After his return Henri Cartier-Bresson takes his first photographies. Travels through Europe with André Pieyre de Mandiargues and Leonor Fini.


1932
first exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery, New York
His photos are presented by Ignacio Sanchez and Guillermode Torre at the ‚Cercle Atheneo', Madrid, Spain. Charles Pegnot publishes his works in ‚Arts et Métiers Graphiques'.


1934
accompanies an ethnographic expedition to Mexico, where he stays for one year.
Exhibition of his photos in the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico-City.


1935
lives in the U.S.A. He is introduced by Paul Strand in the profession of cinema.


1936/39
works as an assistent of production for Jean Renoir.

1937
produces a documentary film about the hospitals of the republican Spain "Victoire la vie" and a film for the ‚red help' "L'Espagne vivra". Louis Aragon introduces Henri Cartier-Bresson to ‚Regards', where he publishes several reportages, one of them about the coronation of George VI.


1940
gets arrested by the german forces. After two attemps to escape without avail he manages to escape.


1943
he joins the MNPGD, a secret aid organisation for captives and refugees.


1944/45
portraits artists and writers, p.e. Matisse, Bonnard, Braque, Claudel. Joins a group of professional photographers in order to document the liberation of Paris. Finishes the documentary film about returning captives and deportees "Le retour"

1946
spends more than a year in the U.S.A., also to make up a ‚posthume' exhibition, which was organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, whose people in charge believed that he did not survive the war.
Travels through the U.S.A. with John Malcolm Brinnin.


1947
founds with Robert Capa, David Seymour and Georges Roger the agency ‚Magnum Photos'


1948 - 1950
spends three years in the Far East. First he lives in India during the homicide of Mahathma Ghandi, then in China during the last three months of the Kuomintang and the first three months of the People's Republic. Afterwards he stays in Indonesia during the time of the independency of the country.


1952 - 1953
lives in Europe. Publishes his first book "Images à la Savette"


1954
publishes the book ‚Les danses à Bali'
Gets the admission to travel in the UdSSR as first western photographer.


1955
first exhibition in France in the ‚Pavillon de Marsan de Louvre', which tours through the whole world. He publishes ‚Les Européens'.


1958 - 1959
travels to China on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the People's Republic.


1960
after a photo-reportage in Cuba he returns to Mexico after 30 years, where he stays for four months. Travels to Canada.


1963
goes to Mexico, where he stays for four months.


1965
spends six months in India and three months in Japan.


1966
Quits the work with the agency ‚Magnum Photos', which keeps to distribute his photos.


1967
IBM charges him with a study about 'man and machine'


1969
spends a year in France to work for the exhibition "on France", shown at the Grand Palais, Paris. Produces two documentary films for CBS News, U.S.A.


1972
travels again to the UdSSR.


1974
apllies oneself with drawing. His interest is still directed at photographies of portraits and landscapes.


1975
First exhibition of drawings in the Carlton Gallery, New York, U.S.A.


1980
travels again to India.


1981
gains the ‚Grand Prix National de la photographie' of the French Ministry of Culture.


1986
grant of the "Novecento Award" by Jorge Luis Borges in Palermo, Italy.


1987
The Museum of Modern Art, New York organises an exhibition of his "Early Works".


1988
The Museum of Modern Art New York establishes the "Henri Cartier-Bresson Prize".


1998
in the year of his 90th birthday he receives many distinctions.


2003
opening of the "Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson" in Paris, France.
Start of the Retrospective "HBC de qui s'agit-il?" in the Bibliotèque nationale de France.
