Will later maintain he worked at Julian's for a year and a half, until spring 1888 (Lockman interview, January 31, 1927, p. 14).

1898 January 7 Breaks silence that had surrounded founding of Ten American Painters by relating the story to reporter friend Hutchins Hapgood, who publishes account on front page of Commercial Advertiser on January 8. The secession of the Ten from the Society of American Artists sparks acrimony among some members of the latter group and controversy in the New York art world.
