Born in Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin (FR)
He studied art in Strasbourg then in Weimar, Germany and finally in Paris in 1908. In 1912, Arp went to Munich where he exhibited with Wassily Kandinsky and the German Expressionists while he staying in touch with French artists and avant garde trends. He was a founding member of Dada in Zurich in 1917, exhibiting with Dada artists in Berlin, Hanover, Paris and New York. While a Dadaist, Arp exhibited his first abstract collages made of torn paper as well as painted wood reliefs, works made using methods of chance rather than design.
After Dada ended in 1919, Arp joined the Surrealist group. In Paris, Arp developed his personal style of abstraction based on biomorphic forms that he charged with change and transformation, as in the natural world. Arp´s three-dimensional sculptures, suggestive, sensual and witty appear to grow and metamorphose from every viewing angle. His materials of choice were marble and bronze. In the United States in the late 1940´s, Arp completed large relief works at Harvard University and the United Nations. Arp was the most important artist to emerge from the Dada movement and he became one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century.
