Biography  Report Missing Data

1903
Born in New York (US)
After the study at the „Art Students League“ he was one of the first
painters of his generation travelling to Europe. In Paris he got
especially involved with the Surrealism.

Back in New York Gottlieb became a founding member of „The Ten“ in 1935,
a group devoted to expressionist and abstract painting.

In 1941 he began to develop „Pictographs“ as a combination between
Surrealism and Abstraction.

In the beginning of the 50s the artist was occupied with „Imaginary
Landscapes“, which grow out directly from the „Pictographs“ with two
unequal, horizontal levels, each contaning a different sort of abstract
imagery.

In 1956 Gottlieb started with „Bursts“, characterized by a disc shape
juxtaposed above a splatter shape in a vertical format.

In the sixties he was concentrated on the „Imaginary Landscapes“ and the
„Bursts“ until the early years of the seventies.

1974
Died in New York (US)
