Den Einstieg in seine konzeptionelle Arbeit verschaffte sich der Künstler über die land art. Bei der Mehrzahl seiner Werke kombiniert Oppenheim technische Verfahren mit dem Spiel der Proportionsverschiebung. Übergroße Körperfragmente, architektonische Elemente, animalische Gestalten und organische Gebilde koppelt er so aneinander, dass erzählerische Momente entstehen. In den letzten Jahren finden sich immer mehr bautechnische Materialien und Gebäudesysteme in seinem Werk. Die Dynamik seiner Werke geht über den Begriff der architektonischen Skulptur hinaus.
