New Exhibitions by tectonic industries & Karolina Karlic

Minneapolis - Franklin Art Works is pleased to premier a 16-monitor video installation by the St. Paul collaborative tectonic industries concurrent with a solo show of recent photographs by the Minneapolis artist Karolina Karlic.

In the Main Gallery - tectonic industries: The desire to stay versus the inevitability of change In their largest project to date, tectonic industries (comprised of Helen Stringfellow and Lars Jerlach), in collaboration with cinematographer Evan Drolet Cook, will premier a 16-monitor video installation that deconstructs Alfred Hitchcock's famed film The Birds.

The desire to stay versus the inevitability of change explores the artifice inherent within the creation of modern myths in popular culture. By referencing a universally regarded film, tectonic industries explores the notion of constructed realities and artificial dialogue.

tectonic industries have been featured in exhibitions at Kansas City Artists Coalition, Rochester Art Center, ONEZERO Projects (Edinburgh), Urban Arts Institute for Contemporary Art (Grand Rapids), Legion Arts (Cedar Rapids), The LAB (San Francisco), The Contemporary Art Institute (Detroit), SOO Visual Arts Center, and a previous Project Space exhibition at Franklin Art Works in 2005.

In the Project Space - Karolina Karlic: Close to Home

The Minneapolis artist will present a series of color photographs taken while in Ukraine in 2005. Karlic's photos document contemporary life and landscapes in present day Ukraine and are part of an extended project that explores and records her connection to the country through family stories and personal narratives.

Karolina Karlic is a recent graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Her work has appeared in solo shows at Juxtaposition Arts, Intermedia Arts, Jen Bekman Gallery (New York) and Wallspace (Seattle).

Franklin Art Works is a non-profit alternative space devoted to presenting new work by local, national, and international artists. Through a mix of exhibitions, collaborative projects and education, Franklin Art Works celebrates the art of our time in all its complexity and diversity.

Both shows are curated by Franklin Art Works' Director Tim Peterson.
