This first major retrospective devoted to the American artist Donald Judd since his death in 1994 brings together important groups of work from all over the world. The exhibition, organised in collaboration with Tate Modern, begins at the Kunstmuseum Basel with a series of pictures from the early 1960s followed by handmade sculptural works. Also on view will be the artist's famous, box-like objects, conceived as solo pieces or as repetitive series laid out out on the floor or wall mounted. They compose and activate the surrounding space with forceful immediacy and are industrially manufactured out of such materials as galvanized iron, Plexiglas or plywood. These works illustrate Judd’s development of a new vocabulary of reduced sculptural volumes, which have become synonymous with Minimal Art. Judd saw in his work such a profound break with European sculpture that he preferred to use the term "specific object". Smaller progressions will also be presented in the exhibition, some of which consist of high-gloss aluminum painted in industrial colors. The oeuvre of the 1980s and early 1990s, presented at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel, will include series of wall pieces or four-part cubes, showing an unusual palette and establishing fascinating connections between light reflections, volumes, color and architecture.
