The development of the documenta – from a sideshow accompanying the Bundesgartenschau (1955) to the documenta 11 (2002) – consists of many contradictions and inconsistencies, but also reflects different artistic and curatorial passions, philosophies and theories, as much as contemporary political and social trends.
50 years of documenta correspond to 50 years of art- and contemporary history, which simply cannot be described in a linear fashion.
The exhibition 50 Jahre / Years documenta 1955 – 2005 concentrates on the fragility of art history, reconsidered from today’s perspective. By essentially leaving the archival material and the artworks without further interpretations and comments, the visitors are in a position to compare and remember independently and to experience atmospheric insights. In order to present a wide range of vision, the exhibition is structured into five interacting and complementary chapters: an archival, an art historical, a site-specific, a cinematic and a scientific chapter.
Archive in motion
In order to do justice to the singular character of each documenta, the various information materials are arranged in eleven separate chambers. This presentation allows a new access to the archival material and a different way of reading. The different compositions are accompanied by artworks by various contemporary artists, who are in this way dealing with one documenta at a time focussing on the archive. Their artworks propose an extended view on the archive and demonstrate – beside the documentary – a creative view of the material.
Discreet Energies
This part of the exhibition brings well-known and less well-known artworks of the past eleven documenta-exhibitions back to Kassel. It is not the intention to recapitulate the by now established canon of modernist art after 1945. The selected works remain in opposition to art historiography, because, anarchistic or poetic as they are, they evade the museum. These artworks relate to contemplation, but also to an absolute realism; they are composed of minimal gestures, precise mimesis or atmospheric setting. The artworks are discreet, because they are not imposing.
