Jim Dine, one of the greatest artists of contemporary art, opens his new solo show at Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm today. Dine exhibits paintings, sculptures and his famous three dimensional techniques whereby he brings new meaning to everyday objects in unconventional contexts.

The exhibition features new painting and introduces Dine’s latest mixed technique in which he unite transparent glass with tools, fabrics and other discovered objects.

Dine is closely associated with the development of the pop-art movement in the early 60’s. He pioneered performance-art with his legendary happenings together with artists like Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg and Robert Whitman.
He was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to New York after finishing his art studies in 1959. In New York he had his first solo show at Reuben Gallery in 1960.

Dine distinguishes himself artistically primarily by attaching everyday objects like clothes and tools to his art works. A reoccurring motif for more than forty years of painting has been the symbol of the heart. Also in the current exhibition hearts are portrayed in his latest works, which makes the exhibition representative for Dine’s entire artistic career.

Mark Gisbourne, professor in art critics at the Universität der Künste Berlin, writes in the exhibition catalogue under the headline ONE FROM THE HEART.

… His works are truly personal, there are no poses or postures, no theatrical dumbness as have been attached to Warhol, just a witty and direct engagement with the material objects used in art-making and placed in front of your eyes….

Dine is represented at museums and collections all over the world such as the Museum of modern art, New York, Guggenheim Museum, New York, Tate Gallery in London, Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst, Humlebæk and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. He works in painting, texts and three dimensional objects and has written and illustrated several books of poetry.

Jim Dine lives and works in Paris and New York.
