Dagmar Varady - »Islands«

Saturday, January 20th, 2006 from 11am to 9pm we will open Dagmar Varady's exhibition „Islands" whereas the center of the show will be her latest work - a great sound/video installation. Moreover, all galleries at Spinnerei present new exhibitions on this day.

Dagmar Varady presents the 3D-video film „Der Hai und das Mädchen" (The Shark and the Maiden), which as room filling installation is underlaid with specifically composed music. A catalogue of the artist will be released for the exhibition.

Manon Bursian writes about the basic work „Der Hai und das Mädchen" (2006):

[...] It is not the fantastic mythical motives that put the work into a context of Cocteau's „Beauty and the Beast" or Hans Baldung Grien's „The Maiden and the Death", not the existential and psychoanalytical associations which are activated in rich plenitude, it is the eyes of the shark which makes the picture an impressive work of art. A rule of the imagination- and horror film says that the character of an artificially created figure expresses itself primarily in its eyes. If the eyes of the figure are convincing the spectator will also be able to comprehend its motives and actions emotionally. The eye zone of the shark meets all expectations one addresses to a „fish figure" from a 3D-animated comedy. The shark seems baffled and somewhat anxious in the face of the strange nature who appears suddenly in front of him. [...]
