Founded in 1947 in Paris, the gallery´s inaugural exhibition was drawings of Henri Matisse, followed by etchings by Pierre Bonnard. Over the next fifty years, the gallery represented major European artists including Joan Miro, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder, Francis Bacon, Antoni Tapies, Louise Bourgeois and Eduardo Chillida, who all had long histories with the gallery. In the 1960´s the gallery expanded and opened an affiliate in Zurich, Switzerland. The final expansion was the establishment of a U.S. office in 1979. In 1981, the management of the gallery passed to Daniel Lelong, who continues to direct it along with Jean Fremon and Jacques Dupin, the renowned poet and expert on Miro. |
