photo san francisco, the third annual San Francisco Photographic Print Exposition will be held July 25-28, 2002 at the Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason Center.
75 galleries and private dealers from the U.S and Europe will present the finest photographic art dating from 19th century to the most cutting edge contemporary photography. Last yearīs event attracted nearly 4000 visitors and more are expected this year.
Collectors, curators, and photographers will have an extraordinary opportunity to view thousands of images. The fair is organized by Stephen Cohen, organizer of photo l.a., the Los Angeles Photographic Print Exposition which celebrated itīs eleventh year in January.
Works by Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugene Atget, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Edward S. Curtis, Michael Kenna, Andre Kertesz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Man Ray, Sebastian Salgado, Josef Sudek, Weegee, Edward Weston and many others will be exhibited for sale. The earliest professional images of Marilyn Monroe taken by photographer Andre de Dienes will be showcased, as will the photographs of Marilyn taken by Douglas Kirkland shortly before her death. The photographic work of Andy Summers, guitar player for the seminal rock band The Police will also be a special exhibit.
The opening night reception will be held Thursday, July 25th from 6-9pm for the benefit of The Fort Mason Centerīs Historic Preservation Fund. Fort Mason Center is one of San Franciscoīs most recognizable destinations. Previously an active military facility, Fort Mason Center is now a thriving cultural center within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The proceeds will go towards enabling The Fort Mason Foundation to maintain and preserve this national historic landmark. Noted photographer Michael Kenna will produce a limited edition print taken at Fort Mason. Proceeds from the sale of the Kenna photograph will benefit The Fort Mason Centerīs Historic Preservation Fund. Noted photographer Michael Kenna will deliver a lecture on Saturday July 27th at 10 a.m. in the Golden Gate Room, of the Conference Center in Landmark Building A. Advance reservations are recommended. The lecture is $5/person. Call 323 937 5525 for reservations.
On-site Collecting Seminars will be held with W.M. Hunt, collector, curator and director of photographs at the Ricco Maresca Gallery in New York; and with Daile Kaplan, Department of Photographs, Swann Auction Galleries in New York.
