ArtFacts.Net has indexed over 500,000 exhibitions
This weekend ArtFacts.Net has indexed over 500,000 exhibitions. Therefore we would like to share with you some insight into our ever growing data structure.
Exhibitions over time and space
ArtFacts.Net wants to reflect the history of modern art exhibitions. In our eyes the history of modern art exhibitions started with the Salon des Refuses
(Note:you have to log in see the details in ArtFacts.Net
) in 1863.
|Number of exhibitions by decade in ArtFacts.Net|
It is very difficult to retrieve data from exhibitions prior 2000. The numbers of entries are getting lower and lower the deeper we strive into the past. At least you will find invitation cards for the decades between 1960 and 2000. However before the 1950s you often need to read correspondence.
In a regional context most of our data is from Western Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Switzerland). This is where it all started and where the density of museums is still the highest in the world.
|Number of exhibitions per year in the last decade (2003-2012)|
For the last decade (2003-2012) ArtFacts.Net has gathered a profound amount of data. This decade has seen the largest growth in the art industry ever. The highest prices have been paid (see wikipedia
) for paintings in this decade and the number of exhibitions and Art Fairs

It is interesting to see that the number of Art Fairs
as a whole have not fallen dramatically after the 2008 crash.
Types of exhibitions
The most active exhibitors are the private galleries. More than 50% of our data is generated through their activity. Private galleries have always been the motor that drives the modern art market.

This is why nearly two thirds of all exhibitions are solo shows. Galleries promote their favorite artists with solo shows.

We have already praised the work of the private galleries. Below you'll see a chart of the top ten most active galleries on art fairs. Galerie Krinzinger
from Vienna has been showing on 177 art fairs around the world. There's no other gallery promoting that well in the world. The Austrian galleries lead this list in another respect. Hilger
